[Vice-Regal. 1 Their Excellencies the Governor-General and the Countess of Liverpool, accompanied by Captain Garland and Lieutenant Millton, A.D.C.'6, will return to Wellington from Auckland this morning. Mr. W. A. Hutton, Mayor of Greytown, and Mr. E. Lukin, are visiting Wellington for tho town-planning conference. Mr. William Brown, head of tho firm of Laery and Co., Ltd., intends to leave on an extended tour. ' Ho has booked a passage by the Makura, leaving for Vancouver in July, and will probably be accompanied by Mrs. Brown and two sons (Private Ray Brown, who recently returned from 'active service, and Gunner Percy Brown, who is on board the Rimutaka. due on May 2G).
After a residence of seventy-two years in New Zealand. Mr. Robert Massey, a highly-respected farmer, of Pakuranga, died on Thursday. The deceased arrived at llowick with his parents in 1847 by the ship Sir Robert Sale, being j:hen a child of five years. Mr. 6pent his whole life in the district. He is/6urvived by his widow and one son, Mr, William Massey. His other son, Mr. John Massey, died two months ago.
Members of tho Wellington Industrial Association last evening congratulated Mr. Thompson upon tho return to the Dominion of his son, Lieutenant_ Reginald Thompson, who had left with the Main Body and served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and France. The meeting offered its good wishes to. Lieutenant Thompson, and to the bride whom he had brought with 'him to jNew Zealand.
Mr. C. Harbottle, of the Union Steam Ship Company's traffic department, left Wellington by the Atua for Sydney, accompanied by Mrs. Harbottle. Mr. Harbottle will remain in Australia "for some weeks on holiday. ■
Chaplain A. Gray', after some three years and eight months in the military training camps,, has received his discharge, and is. taking up his duties as a Salvation Anuy Staff Officer. The chaplain has been in charge of the A.S.A. Institute at Tauherenikau, Avondale, and Trentham, at the latter plaeo for over three years.
Dr. Diamond Jenness, son of Mr. U. Jenness, of Lower Ilut.t, is return home for i brief stay before resinning work with the Cauadiau Government. From an English University Dr. Jenness went to 6tudy anthropology amoftg the wildest tribes of the Pacific Islands, then he went to the Arctic with Stefansson to study the Eskimos. He. had been two years with the last-mentioned people before lie knew that jhe rust of the world was in a state of war. On returning to civilisation he enlisted in .the Canadian Army as a private, tnid is-now under engagements the Canadian Government to writq tlio result of his experiences. He is an "old boy" of Wellington College.
Councillor R. A. Wright, M.P., was yesterday afternoon elected chairman of the Ppblic Health Committee of the City Council.
One of the oldest and most respected residents of Auckland, Mr. John Batgcr, died nt his residence, Oaklands, Mount Eden, lato on Friday night, aged 82 years. Mr. Batger came to New Zealand considerably over half a century ago, and soon after his arrival in Auckland established, with the lat6 Mr. Edward Wayte, a bookseller's and stationer's business in Queen Street. Mr. Batger was connected with the Anglican Church for a great many years. Ho joined the congregation of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Kyber Pass, in 1806. Some years later ho entered the Synod as representative of the St. Sepulchre's Parish, and ho represented the parish continuously in the 1 up to tlie meeting last October. Mr. Batger was chairman of the general trust, board of the 'church from January. 1892. until March 21,1918, and during thar lime ho performed very 'valuable service. After his retirement as chairman of tlio board, ho still remained a member, or soino time prior to his appointment to the General Trust Board, lie was a member of the Standing Committee of tlio diocese. . Mr. 'Batgor was a director of the Sojitli British Insurance Company, Ltd. • '
