\% A BAp SEASON . i SHORTAGE OF FEED IN MANAWATU ! ' (From Our Special Correspondent.) ; !•: Palmerston North, May 17. ; There is a shortage of feed in tno dis. itriot around Palmereton North, but inl.cjuiries made go to show that conditions ;are nothing liko as serious as they aio iini.HawKe-sßay. The-scarcity of feed [arid water have, however, shown their [effects on the.stock markets, which are [decidedly slugglish, more especially whero [cattle. are concerned. Although..this is iCertainly the worst season experienced fot j-jnany years, sheep are still in fair condi. ttion,- but owing to _ the inactivity at the jfreezing works arising from, the shortage of shipping space many lines whioh were ;fit for esport are going back in condijtion. The lighter lands at Marton, Bulls, [Feilding, and Foxton are suffering mostly from the drought, the grass haying Suite a bumt-up appearance, and having ut little eustehahce, while water is.very Scarce. Between Palmerston.-' and :. the. iPohapgina district; more especially;along ,the river.flats, the shortage of feiedtisnot iso apparent, but the supply of 'milk, is :fallinjr off at the factories, and , in the down lands water is'ecarce. ■. f> '.. i'' On ;the• Fitzherbert side .of .-the liana. iTvatu'Biver'feed is very scarce; and water i«ven more.so. At tho.Kahutarewa Creek, 'inear'-the bridge/the traffic is so'great, I caused by the peoplo carting water, that ithe locality resembles a..busy railway.sta;tion.!,.UFurther down,..''.'at .il'akeroa,"tho fewamp, _whieh-at -Jthisj-.time of 'the year generally has six i or:6ev.en inehes.of wafer, bveriit,:is as.ary r as a"b6ard,.'and!p\v.iiig'. Ho the:clay subsoil'the.ground is.ae hard' Sis brick. The'Kairaiiga.'district, although /drier r than'it' has been for-years,' doos !not .show- the ■pletliofa,'. ofjeed.-which- it. jpromised to earlier in the year, and iivhile the grasa is very short there is ap'Ijarehtly a good deal, of nutriment in it, !as the stock are "not showing any appreciable 1033 in condition. Down the line..towards Shannon the heavy swamp lands are "retaining their moisture, and the igrass, is fairly abundant,. and . stock are looking well. The farmers in the Mana. [Tvata district!.have been., so, accustomed ; to lpok for.-eufficientv'mbisture-aiid:: an 'abundance of winter feed that, with few they have been caught quite iunprepared, and very little hay has been saved or root crops grown to provideifor euoh' an emergency-as ; has. happened in the present instance J , '""••■ ■>..•■ ■
, In this connection it is interesting tonote that in November Inst Mr. C. N. iClauson, of Palmeraton North, drew, atitention to,.Jhe. prolific flowering of the. ;oabbago "trees," which Vvas so "noticeable last spring, and strongly recommended [farmers not to "depend upon" grass for feed, but to go in for growing feed which icould he stored for the.-winter. As the ■6pring : was'ii'very'wfet one, his suggestion jwas made light of in ' certain, quarters, jand bow unfortunately Mr.' Clausen's prognostications have been more than [fulfilled. ■ ' ..::£&..
