ADVENTURES OF A PRIME MINISTER
Hit. HUGHES'S TRIP IN AN AEKOPLANE. 3y Teleerapß—Press Association— OoD.vright (Ret. .May 18, 5.5 p.m.) London, May 17. Air. Hughes has arrived in London. Hβ crossed the Channel in a steamer, none the worse for yesterday's exciting incidelts. Mr. Hughes told a reporter that u thick log developed ■ when they readied the const, necessitating the pilot (Lieutenant Briggs, a South Australian) making a ■descent to find the landmarks. Tiro fog was so dense that they almost collided with a clump of trees. Tho pilot skilfully cleared the trees, and decided that the conditions were too treacherous to permit of a safe landing. They then headed for Amiens, but found tli«t (lie aerodrome lmd been shifted, and proceeded to Abbeville, descending on a field close to tho Australian tieneral Hospital, where they were entertained.
A second attempt was subsequently made, to reach tho coast, and again the pilot refused to take the risk of crossing the Channel. The aeroplane landed at Mais'.nciiles, and they stayed the '.light at Boulogne. Still determined to fly the Channel they motored to a neighbouring aerodrome 'in the morning and learned that the flight was impossible. Mr. Hughes will remain, in London until Wednesday unless urgently called to Paris in connection with the Reparation Commission. Me.imi'hilo no further Australian representations will be made at the Peace Conference.- It is understood that an exact settlement of the Nauru Islands has not yet been ar-ranged.—Aus.-N.Z Cable Aesn.
