East and West Coast delegates, held at Otira Tunnel to-day, it was shown that tho worktneu in the tunnel wero averaging 225. lOd. a day. The lowest paid men at Otira wero receiving 15s. a day. Ono dclegato said the Government wore importing men from Australia to work in the coal mines, and they could adopt this plan in connection with tho Otira Tunnel. Tho following motion was carried"That this meeting of representatives of public bodies of Canterbury and AVestlniid requests the Government to como to an immediate decision with refcronco to tho proposal submitted by Mr. Parry for tho electrification of Otira Tunnel. It was resolved to ask tho Government to make an effort to secure tho services of lnembort of tho Now Zealand Tunnelling Corps, now returning to New Zealand, for work in tho tunnel. It was further resolved to ask tho Government to advertise for men for tho tunnel, and, where possible, to oft'or tho work by contract. It was resolved: "That this conference views with alarm tho statements made that at the present rate of progress tho tunnel will not bo completed within four or five years, aud urges tho Minister to take every step in his powor to speed up the work."
