The Labour Conference discussion at Bloemfontein on the colour bar disclosed the deepest differences on the question, the Transvaalers strongly adhering to their attiudo of excluding natives from tin* skilled trades. The secretary of the Federation of Trades stated that within six ■ months three of tho mines on the Rand, employing' fifteen hundred whites, wera closing down. Twelve others would liava to follow suit. His executive was negotiating with tho Government with a vieir to a settlement of the industrial unrest.— Reuter. ASIATIC TRADE RIGHTS. (Rcc. ' A Select Committee of tho Assembly which inquired into the disabilities of British Indians in tho Transvaal has recommended that all legal existing trade rights in certain mining areas'be recog* nised, but that no further trading, licenses or opening of new businesses w allowed to Indians or other Asiatics. Tha committee also recommends immediate legislation providing that tho existing prohibition against acquiring landed pro* })orty shall be extended to any comotmy, in. which the controlling interest belongs to Asiatics.—Aus.-N.Z.
