Lieutenant 13. J. Butler, of Palmerston North, has been appointed quartermaster of the hospital ship Maheno. Lieutenant Butler was quartermaster on the transport Willochrn for two years and a half. Tho euchre party and dance hold under the auspices of the Ffiondly Society Council this week was a most successful function. Tho ladies' euchre prizes wero won by Mrs. D. P. Jones and Mrs. J. Humphreys, and the men's by Messrs. J. Humphreys and C. J. Setter. The dancing arrangements were directed by Bros. R. S. Watson and O. B. Harris.

Mrs. R. Boyne, of 'l'crraco End, has received word that her two.sons, Norman Boyne (a wireless operator) and Corporal Robert Boyne, arc returning 'by the Pakeha, due to arrive on May 27. Private Wheeler, of Longlnirn, and Rifleman I l '. E. Richardson, son of Mrs. G. T. Richardson, of Hokowhitu, are also on hoard the Pakeha.

The second term for all classes commences at the Technical School, Palmerston North, on Monday. Classes in wool-clossing and singing will to started should a sufficient number-" of students enrol. Good instructors have been obtained for both these classes.

Meetings of branches of the Farmers' Union have been held in the Wairarapa during the past week to discuss the remits for tho provincial conference. A Masterton'returned soldier, who lost tho sight of one eyo while on active service, had the misfortune this week, while engaged in engineering work, to suffer a severe injury to his remaining eye.. lie is at present in Wellington securing ,treatment. < , A case of suspected influenza, has been admitted to the Masterton Hospital. Pour successive severe frosts have been •experienced in the Wairarapa this week. The installation of Bro. C. W. Perrin as Worshipful Master, and the investiture of officers of the Masterton Masonic T.odge, took place on Thursday afternoon. There was a large gathering of local, and visiting brothers. R.W. Bro. C. Ellison, district superintendent, acted as installing master. It is slated that the price paid for Mr. l'\ Moore's Makuri property, which has just been acquired by the Government for soldier settlement, was il4rp.er acre.

Smart, were appointed to attend to same, Several members of Totara Lodge, U.A.0.D., paid a fraternal visit to the Fern Leaf Lodge on Wednesday evening at Greytown, and Bros. K. Flanagan, G.P., and Bro. J. N. Grant, G.S., of Wellington, also paid an official visit. Mr. H. H. Close, of Ilawera County, has been appointed overseer to the Woodvillc County Council, mid Mr. G. W. Morton, lumboltoh, has been appointed teamster. At a meeting of representatives of dairy companies at AVoodville this week, Mr. J. A. Stratford, of Daiinevirke, urged the formation of a cheese factories' association. Ho pointed out that if such an association was in existenco, tlio election of a representative for tho National Dairy Association would have been decided without the trouble they were now experiencing. At a previous attempt to form an association Woodvillo had refused to join up, 'but he hoped that another effort would be made this month, and that it would be successful. Mr. Bijker, of Woodvillo, oxploined that tho Daiinevirke district factories desired to bo simply a Uawko's Bay association, whereas Woodvillo wanted it made a Hnwkc's Bay-Hush Districts' association. They did not consider there wero enough factories in Hawko's Bay for an association of their own, ond it would be a stronger and wore, representatives body if the Bush factories wcro included in the district.
