James as assistant censor of telegraph messages at Wellington is gazetted. Mr. J. Pearce Luke, son of Mr. J. P. Luke, who was eent to Portugal as technical adviser to the British Admiralty to report on the condition of enemy snipping lying at Oporto and Lisbon, was in the former port when the recent revolution broke'out, resulting in the shooting of the President. Mr. Luke had a very lively time evading the contending par. ties, and eventually managed to make his escape in a tramp steamer. ■ It is understood, says a southern paper, that Mr. C. J. M'Kenzie, who has occupied the position of District Publio Works Engineer in Otago for the past three years, is to "be transferred to the Wellington district. Mr. Baker, Public Works Engineer at Wanganui,' is named as his successor in Otago and. South-' land. . ■ Mr. F. Castle, whoTias been elected chairman of the Wellington Eospita.l and Charitable Aid Board, is a chemist by profession. He has been a member of the board for six years, the last four of which he has been treasurer to.'the board. Mr. J. A. M'Ewan (Mayor of Petone) has been elected chairman of the Hospital Committee, and Mr. George Petherick succeeds. Mr. D. Campbell as chairman of the Charitable Aid Committee. Mr. Henry Baldwin, wlio was defeated ' in the election for the chairmanship of, the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board at Wednesday's meeting, has resigned his position on the board as io> presentative for the Hutt. M. F. P. Talboys, engineer and manager of the Wanganui MnnicipaV Electric Tramways, arrived in Wellington per motor yesterday afternoon. ■ He is visiting Wellington in connection with new plant for the tramways ordered some time ago. The services of. Mr. Tom Pollard have been secured by the newly-formed Auckland Amateur Operatic Society to produce Gilbert and Sullivan's opera, "The Gondoliers." Mr. V. R. Meredith, formerly of Wellington, is chairman of the committee of the new society, and Mr. F. Earl, K.C., is the president. Mr. Louis Neville, who was a member of the first Rugby team from Otago to tour New Zealand, has died at Timaru at the age of G7. He was engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour Board at the time of the construction of tho Lyttelton dock. Some time afterwards be returned to England, and was engaged as an engineer on tho construction of the Forth bridge, and 'subsequently took up the position of permanent engineer on the Oxford Canal till ill-health compelled him to relinquish his profession ns a civil engineer. At the end of 1910 Mr. Neville, for health ■reasons, returned to Now Zealand, going lo Timaru, and intending to return to England shortly, but was prevented by wav conditions, and lie remained in Timaru until his death. Mr. A. S. Evans, secretary of Messrs. Common, Shelton and Co., Gisborne. has been appointed manager of the Mnsterton branch of the N.Z. Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Co., Ltd., and Mr. George W. Frier, second in charge of tho North Otago Farmers' Co-op. Association, line been appointed manager of the Wanganui brunch of tho same company, Mr. Donison Miller hns been reappointcd (juvermir of the Commonwealth Bank for a terni of seven years from June 1, 1011>. n't a salary of iMOOfI per annum, and travelling allowances at the rato of £2 is. per day. Mr. It. Mnrgall, of To Kuiti, has received news that his son has been promoted lo lieutenant-colonel, and. is commanding a battalion of the 29th Division. The letter conveying thts information was dated March 9, and written from a village about five miles from Cologne.
