CITY COUNCIL COMMITTEES
\ • A LABOUR PKOTEST. !■■ • ■ ■■ : — In the committe: proposals that the Mayor laid before the lirst meeting of the City Couneii yesterday the name of Councillor P. Fraser(Labour) appeared in the suggested iiorsoiiiiel of the Tramways Committee. The .Labour candidates protested against the non-inclusion in the committee of Councillor J. Hutchison (secretary of the Tramwaymen's Union). The matter- was freely discussed, but all the speakers, except Councillors Fntser. Hutchison, Glover, and Chapman appeared to think it inadvisable that Councillor Hutchison should go on the committee. They contended that Councillor Hutchison, if lie was not on tlio' committee, would bo all the freer to discuss and criticise its moves j mid they urged against his inclusion the fact that he was a servant of the tramwaymen. The Mayor said that he Had left Councillor Hutchisou out in order to save the latter tlio embarrassment of being in a falso position. . Councillor Norwood eaid lie believed that if Councillor Hutchison joined the committee ho would be in duty bound to contend for the interests of one class, and that would not be favourable to the interests of the public as a whole. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor Luckie, the" schedule of committees as drawn up by the Mayor was adopted without nllerat'ion.
