The American Society of Arts and Sciences have decided to award, as a memorial to tho late "0. Henry" (Sidney G. Porter), a prize of 500 dollars (£100) to the author of tho best short story written by an American and published in America during 1919. To my ininc), the American short stories are much superior, as a rule, to those by English writers. Prom time to time somo really excellent examples of the short story writing art appear in the American magazines. In most of the popular English weeklies the short stories 'aTe, too often, the veriest drivel.
