Onlookers were of the- opinion•that Bennett was seized-with a fie. , A tally clerk named: John Riley Scrimegeour quickly climbed down a rope and caught hold of Bennett, and at the same time Gunner Styants, of the liner Whnkatane, dived from the stern of the ves-sel,--a height of about 30ft., and J. J Boss, a carter in the employ of Camp--bell and. feon, dived from the wharf and swam towards the unfortunate man. Bennett, was soon brought to the steps and carried up on to the wharf, wliere Dr. Elliott attended him and ordered bis removal to the hospital.' TJio prompt action of- the Twcuers undoubtedly saved Bennetts. Ufa as be-was not a swimmer. Ins hospital authorities reported yesterday that Bennett was principally suffering from shock.
