Mr. and Mrs. H. ltcdwaync and Mr. and Mrs. W. • Shannon (t'eilding) are spending a few days in Wellington, Mr. and Mrs. Eedmayne leave on June 4 by (he s.s. Heniuora for a short visit to England. A lecture under tho auspices of tho Brooklyn Epidemic Committee, was given bv Nurse Everett in the Fullford Hall on Tuesday night. Nurse- Everett explained methods. of- treatment, including the sponging down of patients (o reduce temperatures, i.-he answered various questions, and was. accorded a hearty voto of thanks for her address. A work of special importance has been j begun in the city schools in the provision of siiuplo instruction in home nursing' for the senior girls. '" Br. Ada Paterson, o» the Education Department, and SchoolNurse Willis visited Kilbiniic School this week and gave instruction to the girls on the principles and practice of nursing. The girls were shown how to .make sick beds, take temperatures, sponge patients, and so on, and were taught the principles of 6iek diet. Tho instruction, which was given with practical demonstrations, was much appreciated by both pupils and teachers: It is intended to give similar instruction and demonstrations at other schools.' Among those who wero-present at iast ; night's annual meoting of tho -Wellington Branch of the Kew .Zealand.Red Cross were .Mrs.' Sludholmo, representing .the Tailmpe Red Cross Branch, Mrs. Suisted, the Wanganui Red Cross Society, and Mrs. Crookes, the New Plymouth Sub--Centre. Mr.. Young (chairman) expressed tho pleasure that was felt at the presenco of representatives of other branches at such occasions. During the course of his speech at the annual meeting of tho Wellington Red Cross Branch, General Richardson fnoke of the part that women had played in helping to win the war. Before it broko out no nation had realised what they were capable of. doing. With the men withdrawn from their work, howcrcr,the women had come forward and taken (heir place, and so made it possible to win. A tribute was paid to the work of the New Zealand women at Home for tho «ick and wounded soldiers in the hospitals. They had worked day t-i.d night for love of their countrymen and no" men were better caicd for. better looked after, than were those from >ew Zealand. ' . At last night's meeting of Ihe TVII inston Red Cross Branch it wns decided to amend the rule soverning renreso'itation on tho committee as follows:—Lacli centre shall appoint a women's committee which* shall" consist of. a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, who shall attend to the general business of tlie centre, and also an executive committee elected by the society at cash annual meeting, which shall ■ ■ consist ot women and 15 men, and (hey,shall attend to the finance and organisation ot the whole district, and shall appoint their own chairman. A-.Triumph.for Melba. • Madame Melba had a unique triumph at the opening of the. Covent Garden season and aroused immenso enthusiasm. The' principals were- recalled seventeen times after the first act, and still the audience insisted on several further reappearances of Madame Melba alone, which were the signal for deafening cheers and "Coo-ccs."—Aus.-N'.Z.
