MENACE TO MORALS
» THE HON. J. A. HANAN ON PICTURE SHOWS. Strong disapproval of pertain picturee being shown in kinenia theatres, and of the too frequent attendance of children at such shows, was. expressed by the .Minister of Education (the Hon. .T. A. Hanau), speaking at the annual meeting of tho Boys' Institute last night. _ The Minister hinted also of tho coming of restrictive legislation to deal with this matter. ■ "I regret to say," said the Minister,, "that I i'.ui receiving complaints 'against 6omo of the pictures being shown in'certain parts 01 this country, which pictures are of a debasing character. There is no doubt that such pictures exercise a baneful effect on juvenile minds. Tho influence of these pictures cannot but load to some extent to moral wreckage." He had, he said, drawn tho attention of, the Minister of Internal Affairs to the need for more effective control over pictures, and he hoped that Mr. Russell would support him in this matter. "I hope/ , continued the Minister, "that during next session legislation will be. introduced to deal with juvenile labour and also with too frequent attendance of young', peoplo at picture shows—children without parental control or care. I think it is a disgrace to any c : ty or any State to allow young people of such an age to be out at night, unattended, at picture shows and 6uch 'entertainments; I hope that these proposals now under consideration by the Education Dtpart* jnent will be given legislative cftect next session." (Applause.)
