MAOEI DELAYED ON HE$ SOUTHERN TRIP. By To'legraph.—t'resti Association. Christchurch, May 13. The steamer Maori, which usually readies liyttoltou at 6.30 a.m., did not arrivo until 10.15 this morning. Tlio local manager of the company stated that tlio delay was duo to trouble in the stokehold. The vessel was half an hour late in leaving Wellington last night. The full complement of fireman was obtained, but several of the men were so incapacitated through drink that they were unable to attend to their work. Two of ihe ship's boilers could not be used, mid the vessel consequently came down under greatly reduced speed. The other firemen did their best to relieve the situation, but it was found impossible'to use all tlio hollers. The coal was entirely satisfactory. Tho Awanui left Auckland on December 18, carrying about 40 tons of cargo for Niuo Island. The wreck occurred on Saturday, January ,11, last. All handa were saved otter a ngrrow escape from drowning. * The vessel was at Aloft <m January 7, and was discharging until tlio 10th, moderate east from south-east, winds, prevailing at tho timr. Next morning alio was expected to depftrt for. Abatele and complet-o loading for Auckland. During the night a strong wind from the west commenced to blow, which by the morning had increased to a hurricane. Heavy seas, were breaking over the reef, and Hie vessel's position wae precarious. About 7.30 a.m. tbo last cable parted, aud tlio crew abandoned the vessel. Soon after a huge wavo lifted her bodily over tho reef. Finally the Awanui wan waehed up against' the cliff, and rapidly b?gan to break up. fortunately some of the merchandise for the island hnd been landed, and only a portion of the shipment of copra hail Ijeeu loaded. The cargo for Tuapa bad previously been landed at A,tofi owing to the unfavourable weather odnditionß. but the Abatele consignment was lost.
