CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON. The annual telegraphic match between' the .above club.? is scheduled to commence on Saturday, evening next, and to be concluded on tin following Saturday. Great interest is being taken in this fixture, which w.-.s inaugurated iu 1879, hut did not becomo an annual event until 1913. Twelve matches have been played between the two clubs, of which Wellington has won five and Canterbury four, while three ended in a tie—viz., in 1879, 1892, and 1910.. That the tennis have kept together very well is filso l evident when the contest is viewed from another augle, viz., number of games won, Wellington's total being 73J to Canterbury's 70!. As a set-oil' to Wellington's slight superiority in the earlier matches, Canterbury has done splnididlv in the later contests. In fact, Wellington has not won a match since 19)1, the last four annual contests having yielded Canterbury three wins and one tie. On this occasion the-southern team will be exceptionally strong, as it will include' Mr. Sevcrne, the Canterbury -"champion, who has returned from France, and who in pie-war days represented.Canterbury on twelve occasions, losing only one game. Mr. G. 11. Glutton, a former member of the Canterbury Club, will umpire for the southerners, at this i;nd. The following have been chosen to represent the local club, it being presumed that fourteen boards are to be used (as wns done last year):— Messrs..A.'W. 0/Davies (captain), 'Barnes, W. E. Mason, W.'Maekay, Rolling, Still, James, H.'G. Lee, Godtschalk, S. Gyles, G.. P. Anderson, E; S. Taylor, M'Nair, and Brookcr. Emergencies: Messrs. White, A. Clark, Tanner, and Fnulknor. The services of Messrs. Purchns, Fouhv, W. F. Barraud, and 11. A. Ward are not, available on this occasion. It has been suggested, with a view to expedition, that the rate of play should he increased to twenty moves an hour on this occasion. Since the above was in type advice has been received that the Canterbury Club agrees to play being at the rate of twenty moves per hour. The southern team is ns follows:—Messrs. Severne (captain), H. H.' Andersen, Kennedy, King, Hawkins, Twyford, Lovell-Smith, Woodford, Joyce, Gourlay, Bruton, Pihl, Darwin, and E. L. Wilson. The game at Board 1, Severne-v.' 1 Davis, is to be nlayed over the board here, as Mr. Severne will be on a'visit to Wellington next week.
