An amazing' vendetta of the undorwoi'ld has been brought to light in Melbourne. The proceedings commenced in the latter end. of last'year, when an audacious robbery was committed at Kilpatrick's (jewellers), in which trays of diamonds, valued at one thousand pounds, were 6tolen in broad daylight. Arrests followed, and the jurymen complained of receiving threats. One Crown witness waa brutally assaulted. . Early this year a certain Edward Whiting was admitted to hospital with 'seven bullet wounds in his head and arm. He refused to divulge the name of his assailant. Later three men were ' arrested outside the homo of Matthew Daly. All wsre heavily armed; Latterly the fray has been continued more openly. .Albert Lewis was battered with revolver butts and. lead piping, and shots wero fired through Dmys bedroom window. _ Frederick Cousins was 6hot nine times, in the head and neck, and Whiting was ..shot at times. Seven men were arrested last week in .connection with the vendetta. Most of them were bailed out The feud culminated to-day in tho shooting of Henry Slater in the street. He is now ,in hospital with five wounds. The assailant was arrested. Slater had been pre-, viously bailed out in connection with the shooting of a constable, and was also one of the men arrested for participation in the vendetta.—Press Assn.
