TRANSPORT PROBLEMS
« THE PROPOSED CONFERENCE. Th.' proposed provincial conference of delegates of chambers of commerce and locaf bodies, called by the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce, was mentioned at a meeting of the: council of tho chamber vestordny. The date ot the conference, which will consider transport and'other problems, has not yet been fixed, 'but probably will be in tno late portion of June. The council set up a committee to prepare remits for the conference. It decided that tins number of delegates 6hould not be liin* Amongst the matters to be discussed at the conference will bo the following proposals by Mr. V. T. Moore, chairman of the Johusonville Town Board:- rhat the Government be asked to legislate during the next session of Parliament for the creation of an arterial roads board for tho North Island of New Zealand, empowered to lay solid slabs of concrete on tho surfaces of the arterial roads contiguous to the Wellington. Auckland, Wellington-Napier (via Winriirapa), and Marton-New Plymouth railway lines." "That such board be financed by the issue of State legal tender notes upon which no interest shall be charged, but which notes shall he redeemed on the completion of this public work at the rate of 5 per cent, per milium ■ from the proceeds of a Government tax of JCI each upon all tyres imported or manufactured for use on powerdriven vehicles within the North Islnnd of New Zealand." "That the upkeep of these concrete surfaced .roads shall bo borne by the local body in which each length of roads vests, after tho expiry of one year from tho date of laying the concrete by the arterial roads board.
