CIVIC ELECTIONS

RECOUNT OF VOTES

LABOUR RETAINS FOUR SEATS ON COUNCIL The official recount in connection with the municipal, Harbour Board, and Charitable Aid Bonrd elections wae concluded shortly 'before 10 o'clock on Saturday night. Owing to the number of candidates who were in the field, the task of checking the votes was no light one, and the under the able direction of Mr. James'Ames, returning officer, had been working day and night since Monday in order that the work might be completed as expeditiously ae possible. So far as the figures for the City Council were concerned the recount did not disclose any alteration in the. position of the candidates as first published after the election, • but in every inst'anco the totals required amendment. Mr. Luke's majority for the Mayoralty was 991. The four Labour candidates for the Council, Messrs. J..Hutchison, P. Fraser, 111'., C. H. Chapman, and G. Glover, retained their seats, but the latter had a very close call, defeating Mr. P. Meadowcroft by the narrow margin of four votes. Seeing that the difference in the two totals is so small, Mr. Meadowcroft may claim a recount. This is not considered likely, however, as great pains were taken to ensure that the chocking of the' votes should be carried out with the utmost accuracy. The recount having been concluded, and the returning officer liaving published his declaration of the result of the poll, it is probable that the first meeting of the new City Council will take place at noon on Wednesday; when tho Mayoral installation ceremony will bo held.
