The wins of Slojght-of-Haml and Master Lupin at Awapuni will not entail penalties for tho Great Northern Hurdles, for which both aro well fancied.
The Hawera-trained Royal Park is spoken of by some as a lilccly winner of the Century Hurdles. It is said that an offer of S.GSO was recently refused for the'son of Sylvia Park. After her two good races at Awapuni it can be expoctcd that Desert Gold will not be retired from the turf just yet'. When obviously not. herself, she performed wonderfully well in tho Gold Cup, and on tho second day was equal to beating tho best of the two-year-olds in the Manawatu Stakes.
After some four years' absence from an English racecourse, Lieut-Colonel C. ,T. Coventry resumed duty as a starter in England just before the last mail left. He was, when with the Worcester Yeomanry, taken prisoner and sent' to Yozgaa, Asia Minor, (where, singularly, later he was joined by Captain Percy Woodland (the well-known cross-country rider), who spent a year and eight months there. At tho end of a year .Lieut.-Colonel Covontry, suffering Irom typhus, was conveyed to the hospital at Alexandria, where lie remained twelve months, and only arrived in England a few weeks ago.
Tho hurdlo horses Gladful and Wishful, who were left in Sydney when tho rest of Mr. W. Kemball's team were taken to Melbourne, havo now reached tho southern State, and will be raced thero during the winter months.
A cablegram from Melbourne this week announced that Mr. W. R. Kemball had become tho owner of tho racehorse Explorer. Previously Explorer, who is by tho imported French siro Kenilworth, from Tilga, had carried E. A.' Connolly's colours, and was successful in a hurdlo race at Williamstown on April 21. He started favourite in a field of nine, and with 9st. 121b., on his back ran the two mile 6 in 3min. 43sec., 50 that he, would appear to bo a very useful gelding. Trainer A. M. Wright: has ohgaged Foeman and First Lino in tho jumping ovents at the Duncdin meeting next month.
Thore died at Eastings last week tho veteran trainer, James Munii, who for many years trained tho To Mahanga-bred horses. Deceased was 0110 of the bestJcnown trainers in Ilawko's Bay, and he was popular with, all classes.
Tho Otaki-trained Somo Girl has been engaged in three events 011 the opening day of the Marlborough meeting next week. Somo Girl showed fair form at fho Woodvillo meeting last month, and she should annex a stako 011 the Blenheim trip.
It looks a,? if tho Marlborough meeting, which takes place on Tuesday, Wetland Friday of next week, will be the, roost successful yet held by the Rlenboini club. Good class horses are enRaged in all the events, and the. Cup, in particular, should be a lino race. Wellington patrons of tho meeting can journey to Picton by tho PaMena, which sails at 1.30 p.m .on Monday.
At Hid conclusion of the Marlborough .meeting Rcbekah is to be spelled for u couple of months, ami will not be raced again until next spring.
