' ART IN 'NEW ZEALAND. A CATHEDRAL TO ENCOURAGE IT. From time to time efforts have been made in the direction of assisting Art in New Zealand to stand on its own feet, ns it were; and there is no doubt that, in spite of this handicap, imposed by living in a' young country, our artist? and sculptors have done good work, much of which will stand the tost ot time. Inspiration is recognised as the great impetus to all work of this kind. In the natural beauties of New Zealand there should be inspiration enough-.for students of tlie lino arts. As against this, however, it must be admitted that quite a contrary effect is produced by the crude and unfinished architecture of the cities of tlio Dominion, which leave their impress daily njion tlio minds of our artists. For' this reason it is imperative that, to produce the best work, there is need for at least one perfect example of artistic architecture in each city. This need is acutely felt in Wellington. Any effort to meet it should, therefore, lie welcomed, and tlio Wilding of an Anglican Cathedral in the capital city must have the hearty support of all lovers ol Art audi of beauty in architecture. In- this proposed building tlio vel'y best of tho skilled worker's art is to be enshrined. Every wing, every transept, and pillar r,nd rafter will be a tiling of beauty, while tho spccinl commemoration windows and other portions of (lie fine building will bo equal to anything of the kind elsewhere. The impetus such n Cathedral would give to Art in New Zealand i§ incalculable. Thoso who wish to see this praiseworthy project brought to a successful conclusion aro asked to communicate with tho Secretaries of tlie Fund, Rev. W. Fnncourt, St. Thomns'e Church, Newtown, Wellington; Rev. J. G. S. Bartlett, Feath.erston; or Rot. C. 11. G. Cowan, Hawora. Gifts gratefully received. Promises may be spread over a period of years.
