The French edition of the Almanach do Gotha for 1919 (which is a standard authority on tho various royal houses'' and titled nobility of Europe), has been brought to Paris fresh from the Justus Perthes printing press at Gotha. The preface contains a confession of the innumerable difficulties which htk'c beset the editors at the dawn of the new era. "The dismemberment of Austria," they observe, "and the transformation of 22 German States into as many Republics interrupted our labours as we were going to press." One's first impulse is'to learn the future status, according to the Almanach (le Gotha, of the ex-Kaiser and the exCrown Prince. . Yor the ci-divant—the French Revolutionary term abounds in this register of fallen Royalties—German Emperor, King of Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg, Burgrave of Nuremberg, Count Ilohenzollern, Sovereign of Silesia and Glatz, etc., we find the following:— Succeeded his father, and renounced the throne November 8, 1918, Doctor in Law of the University of Berlin; Doctor in Medicine of the University of Prague; Doctor in' Science of the University of Klausenbnrg; engineering director of the Polytechnic Schools of Germany,. formerly Grand Admiral and FiehWMarshal, General, etc.

The Almanach says: Frederick William Victor August Ernest of l-russia ei-divant Imoerial I'rince of the German Empire, Prince Royal of Prussia. Imperial Royal Highhess, born at the Marble Palace, near Polsdaui, on May C, 1882. Renounced his rights and succession to the throne November 8 (December 1), 1918, Doctor in Law, University of Berlin; Doctor in Engineering, Polytechnic Schools, L'erliu and Cliarlottenburg; Doctor in Veterinary Medicine, Higher Veterinary School, Berlin; formerly General of Infantry, etc. Turning to the nai>slmrg,s we find:— i Charles (Karl) T, Frances Joseph Louis Herbert George Marie, ci-divant Emperor of Austria, Apostolic King of Hungary (the fourth of that, name), King of. Bohemia, Dublintia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia, etc. ■ The Almanach sums up the tremendous events which caused tlin "brilliant sppoiul" to crumble to dust thus-.— The former Austro-Hungariiin Monnrchy . . . split up as a result of revolutionary events in the months of October and' November, 1918, into several independent national States. Tn this way were formed the Renublic of GermauAusiria. the Ozecho-Slovak Republic, the South Slav Stat\ and the Republic of Hungary. The kingdom of Serbia claims Bosnia and Herzegovina; Rumania claims the Bnkowina and Poland claims Galicia, The lesser constellations have all similarly placed. 'Frederick 11. (William Louis Leopold is mevelv described as -ci-divant Grand Duke of Baden; Louis 111 (Leopold Joseph, Marie Aloysius AlfrnJl) as ci-divant iving of Bavaria, anu no on. The -Almanach is careful to note the "provisional'* state of affairs in Germany. It declares that all the German Governments are temporary.
