MANAWATU MEETINGVAGABOND 'AND CHIMERA SCORE AGAIN. By Telegraph.—Special Corresrondent. Palmerston North, May 8. The Manawatii races were concluded to-day. The totalisator handled J":38,1W, as mjiiinst .<!J5,3i)7 on the second day of the last year. The total for the meeting wan ,£74,239, against ,£91,310 the previous year, Kaiiuniangu and Minister were withdrawn from the Hurdles, and Master Lupin was sent out a "short-priced favourite. Reformation v/as early in the lead, with Vacuum, handy. ■ The favourite ran through down the back stretch, and was iirst over-the last fence. Ho won very cfisily from Vacuum, who boat Multi-c-lpnl by a. length. Thrace was fourth. Potentiality was the only ecratching in the Sronyhurst Welter Handicap, I'abriqiiette being made favourite. Sho •wiis last away, and. at no time threatened -danger; ' Gold Problem made the running- from Hurry Up and Multainc. lii the straight Golden Grafton came fast, but Hurry lip got nil opening on thti rails, and in a good finish ho beat Multaine by a half-length, with- Minister C '°C"adet P 'was'a slightly better favourite than Pretty Hobby in the Hack Welter Handicap, "in which all the acceptors went to the post. The Speaker got the best, of the start, but he was steadied, nndilown the buck Glentour and Golcorida yet a fast pace, the two favourites being well back. Hailand became prominent at the turn, where Golconda. was done with. The Speaker came fast in the straight, and in the last few strides lie cut down Glentour. Railaml was hvo lengths away, mil then came the. two .favourites. The Speaker was neglected oii the machine. A good field contested the Manawntu Stakes, ond the Lowry bracket, Desert Gold and Lucid, was tho favourite choice with hackers. Tho top-weight looked all the better for , her race yesterday. .'At the/star!: fill* began well, but Hetaua and Manila soon got to the front, and the mare dropped in behind them. With two furlongs gone. Miss Gold joined the front rank, and Hetaua was stopped, and in going back ho interfered with Warpliinc Miss Gold, Lady Ball, and-Manila. wrt'C in a line entering the. straight, but then Desert Gold ; dashed up, , and a roar from the crowd proclaimed her victory. Insido the distance Lucid and Wai'plano shot out, and the top-weight had to be ridden right out; She won by nearly two lengths from her stable companion, who beat, Warplane by a head. Hetaua finished en well in fourth place, and then came Miss. Gold and Amytlias. .The winner got a great reception, and everyone was pleased to see her finish up the season with a win. Warplane and Iletimn <ero both unlucky on the journey. Ermine was withdrawn 'com the Nursery Handicap, and the public backed Bindle, Royal Stag, and Murihiku in .that order. Uoyal Slag would not- come np to the tapes', but eventually he got out well, while Bindle was plow to movo. Murihiku soon ran to the front, and followed by Spfpchmakor and Royal Stag and Nursing Sister, she led into tho straight. The leader was not troubled in tho run home, arid sho won easily from Sueechmaker and Royal Stag. Nursing Sister was next. Gazique was the best backed of the runners in .the Longlrarn Handicap, with Vagabond and Nobleman next in. order. Gazique set out to win from end to end, but Master Moutoa joined hjm going out of the straight, and kept him at it the'whole way. Down the back Nobleman was whipping the. field, but on the bond ho went round the field, and was first into the straight. Then Vagabond joined him, and the pair were locked together over the last furlong. A great finieh saw Vagabond gain the verdict in the last couple of strides. Marquetour was four lengths away. The winner seems to bo improving with the- racing he is getting, but he was a {rifle lucky to win to-day. Differently handled, . Nobleman would liavo reversed position!) with him. p

Him. p Tho Hack Flying Handicap drew a field of ten, Wonder being a big favourite, will) Astinome second choice. The public picked it right, and Wonder was in front all the way, and just lasted long enough to stall olf Astinome's rush in the straight. Mandrake was three lengths away, followed by Achillion Tonukohc, and Tunatau, tho last three having, been prominent most of the way, / The- Borough Handicap was the. biggest lK'tting race of the meeting, Demos, Chimersi, Tigritya, and Nystad being backed in that order, with very littln between them. I)emo3 and Tigritya led to the straight, where Chimera joined in, and gradually wearing then) down, sho beat Demos by half a length, with Ti--I,'ritya a length away, followed by Gold Problem 1 Nystad got olf badly, and was last all the way.
