INFLUX OF HINDUS
A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE.
In ooueequenco of some romarks in the Auckland papers recently regarding an alleged influx of Hindus into this country the Minister of Internal Affairs has had prepared a statement showing the numbers of these people in the country. At the census in October, 1916, the Hindu population waa 165, or, including half-castes, 181. Five of the Hindus and 9 of tho half-castes were females. Following are the returns of arrivals and departures since tho taking of tho census: In 1916 (two months), arrivals 27 males, departures 15 liialea; in 1917: avrivale 90 mates and 2 females, departures 12 males; 1918: arrivals i'M males and i females, departures 1!) males; 1919 (three months): arrivals 80 males and 1 female, departure 1 male. Tho Hindu population of the Dominion, making no allowance for births and deaths, was, on March , 31 of this year, 45(5, or, including half-castes, 472, a very considerable increase on the figures shown by tho 1916 census.
