Mr. T. 11. Haraer, who has been acting as auditor in the High Commissioner 8 Office in London , for some years past, has- resigned his appointment as from December 31 next, and he is to be given six months' leave as from June 30. A temporary appointment will bo made by the Controller and AuditorGeneral until the end of the year, when a permanent appointment will be made.
Lieutenant-Colonel B. C. Freyborg, V.C., triple D.5.0., of Wellington, ha? decided to adopt the service as a profession. Ho is now a captain in the •Grenadier Guards, with the brevet rank of lieutenant-colonel aud temporary rank of brigadier-general.
Dr. T. J. Hughes, who was District Health Officer at Auckland and was transferred to Dunedin, has arrived thero and has taken up the position recently occupied by Dr. l''nrie.
Dr. C. , J. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, is at present in Diinedin. Bcforo returning to AVollington in about a fortnight's time Dr. Reakes will probably visit tho West Coast.
Colonel Young, Director of tho Live Stock Division of tho Department of Agriculture, returned yesterday from a visit to the north.
The death is announced from Christchurch, by the Press Association, of Mr. T. Griffiths, aged 91. Mr. Griffiths arrived in Canterbury in 1858, and wa.s well known in connection with agriculture. Until recently the task of compiling tho official ivar history of tho Ist (Canterbury) Regiment was in the hands of Lieutenant G. Weston. Lieutenant Weston has now taken his discharge 'at ffome, >njn<l Captain David Ferguson, M.C., of Christohurch, has been appointed to carry on tho work.
Another of Auckland's old identities, Mrs. Catherine O'Neill, died on Monday at the teeulence of her daughter, Mrs. M. Benjamin, Grey Lynn., Deceased had attained tho age of 100 years, and up till about threo months aso was extraordinarily active. She retained her faculties almost to her death. The deceased lady was born in Limerick. Ireland, in 1819, and in 18W she and her husband, who predeceased her by some years, migrated to South Africa/ Subsequently she resided, in Australia for some time, but in the sevonties she settled in Auckland, where she remained until her death. Mrs. O'Neill is survived by one son and one daughter. ■
The Gazette announces that a Meritorious Service Medal has been awarded to Sergeant Chailes W. W. Groves, of the Royal New Zealand Artillery; Long Service and Good Couduct Medals to Ser-Reant-Major (Warrant Officer) Lewis A. Clements, of the Permanent Staff, and Battery Sergeant-Major Joseph A. Abrams, Semeant Fred. Fieldsend, Corporal John P. Williams, Gunner Leonard Yosper, and Gunner Herbert J. Gerrard, of the Eoyal New Zealand Artillery. Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medals have been awarded to Captain Robert Mncartney (Ist Mounted Rifles), Lieutenant William W. Dutton. (unattached list), ■ and Quartermaster Walter H. Knight (New Zealand Garrison Artillery).
In tlia published list of ■ passengers proceeding to San Francisco by R. 11.5. Paloona on Saturday last thero were included Mr. and Mrs. Hewlett. Mr. Hewlett's name was included in error. It was only Mrs. Hewlett who sailed by the Paloona.
