NEW ZEALAND TROTTING ASSOCIATION
MORE TOTALTPATOR PERMITS TO BE APTLIED FOR. llj' Telat'raxiii-Press Asioclotlon. Christchurch, May 7. Mr. P, Selig, president of the New Zealand Trotting Association, at a meeting of the Tioard to-day, made a lengthy reference to'the position of clubs all over the Dominion in rcsnect of lotalisalor permits. He pointed out that for some time the association hr.d had the subject under review, and had appointed representatives from amongst the board to report as to the requirements of their district. They had been working, but now that the Minister of Inlernai Affairs had recognised that the sport of trotting should bu further encouraged, as shown in his recent remarks, by more totalisator assistance, he .(Air., Selig). was of opinion that the association should at once take steps to endeavour lo secure further permits. That the sport was still growing m the affections of tho people was evidenced by the large attendances at meetings, and it was absolutely necessary that there should bo an increase of permits so that clubs which had none should have the assistance that thev merited. In the South Island and in 'the North Island, both from a meeting and a sporting point of view, more permits wore necessary to cmfKe the clubs lo cater for the interests of the sport. • The trolling .clubs originally had . been deprived of three permits that nhould have been available for them, and apart from these the sport of trotting had -undoubted claims for further totalisator support. Ho siißsested that representations should be at once-made to the authorities. The president's remarks were supported by all (he members of the board, and it was resolved that the president, vicepresident, and Mr. Short be a,committee to go to Wellington to confer with the executive uf the N?w Zealand Trotting Conference and the New Zealand Sports Protection League, and form a deputation to Cabinet. Under the rules of trolling adopted bust August flie new mode of election for members of the Trotting Association was brought; into force to-day. The president explained that three South Island members retired, at (he end of the season, and who flic three were to be had to be decided by ict. It was suggested that the. names, of' tho members should be placed in n lia'l and that the president should draw three. The first name he maw was his own, then those of .Messrs. Kitchingham and Thomson. These are eligible for re-election, and it :s understood Unit tilt-;; will be renominated. In discussing (lie case of a driver who had twice slurtcd before his time, complaint was made of the present unsatisfactory starling system, li was unanimously decided In. recommend the conference (o adopt the. yards system.
