THE ANTWERP EXPEDITION
GENERAL -RICHARDSON'S OPINION. Various war.experts have Jit different times expressed widely different opinions about the ill-starred Antwerp Expedition in the early days of the war. Genoral Richardson tuok part in that expedition, with the Naval Brigade, and he has no doubt at all that tho expedition achieved.a very important measure of success. Ho referred to, tho subject in his speech at the Town Hall last ing"All sorts of mistaken ideas have arisen about tho Antwerp Expedition," ho said. "The expedition achieved 'the result of delaying tho fall, of Antwerp for only four days. That gave time for the British Main Body, Lord French's Army, to be brought over, tinio for the Belgians to" retire, and for the British to effect a junction with the troops on the Belgian coast. Realise what would have happened if; tho fall of Antwerp had.not been delayed for four days. The Germans would have been in Calais in 1911! Always remember that. 'At th& time a great politician was severely, criticised over this particular stunt. That' 6tunt 6aved Calais, and" that is good enough for me." •
