STORY OF A BOLSHEVIST DEFEAT
GENERAL IRONSIDE'S REPORT

The dug-outs withstood the shelling and protected the infantry well. The enemy assembled under cover of the woods, and were speedily dispersed when they advanced in the open. One party of Bolshevists attempted to Let round t.ho British flank, but the Russian infantry counter-attacked and defeated the enemy. General Ironside pays a tribute to tho Canadian artillery, and also Russian artillerymen, who manned the British Impounders, which were the deciding factor in the battle.—Aus.-N.Z. ( Cable Assn. A tolcgram from Helsingfors to the "Daily Express" says that Bolshevist spies, having learned the details of tho defences of Shenkursk, on the Vaga River, 275 miles south-eastward of Arcliangelsk, organised a dotachment of axemen, who attacked the American guard during tho night, beheaded sixty out oi eighty pickets, and-gained' an "entranco fc;> tho fort.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CLOSING INMTROGRAD (Rec. May 1, 1 a.m.) Paris, May 5. Finnish troops and General Jndenich'6 Russian volunteers are within twonty-two miles of Petrograd. The Russiaa Bolshevik Government has proclaimed a stato of siege in Petrograd, relying for defence mainly on the Finnish Red Guards. Tho Bolshoyiki havo appealed to the proletariat to assist in repelling General Jlannerheim's Finnish White Guards. The principal motive of Mnnnerheim's advance is to forco a favourable solution of tho Finnish question, hoping to compel the Bplsheviki to concede their .demands" before a.
