ACADEMY 01' FINE ARTS. Eemote as we are from the scenes of tlio recent war, our soidiers, many, of tliein artists, Imvo been in the firing line, and during days of' furlough have had opportunities of visiting Olil World galleries and seeing audi art exhibitions as were open, 'l'ho results arising Iroiu this aro already noticeable ill New Zealand art circles, and will become more end more apparent as tiie years pass by. In the great war, now happily at an end, the artist's skill lias been requisitioned as never before, and a very real service has teen rendered by art which, in a large and potent way, has helped the nation to gain tiie victory. Incidentally, too, the war has helped to democratise arc and bring it to , the people. The strides which liavo been mailt- in our own small part of the art world are clearly to bu seen in the works whicili are now. being shown.at the Art Gallery, and of which extended notice has already appeared in our columns. The thousand bits oi beauty in our own land, tne grandeur ol our .mountains and,. forests, our rivers and our coastline, are just what kmc our country to her children. It is these things more than any other probably which give risq. to the finest spirit of true patriotism, 'ami which call to the artist to du the best that is in nini. The Art Gallery will be open to-day from 10 a.m., and the opportunity is uttered of seeing what is regarded as the best sketch exhibition yet held.
