It was promoted by the three suburban parishes of Wadestown, Northland, and South Karon. Tho hall haa been attractively decorated, chiefly with bunting, and liberal provision has been made for the .entertainment and delectation of visitors. Each of tho parishes is: represented by a well-laden stall for (ho sale of all sorts of goods. Thei'c are side-shov/a also, and a refreshment room, the latter under the chnrgo of Children of Saint Mary. A voluntary orchestra discourses music throughout the evening. Its pei«onnol is as follows: —Mrs. Emerson, Miss O'Neill, Miss Ejau, Miss Beirne, and Mr. A. M'Dpnalcl. The sale of sweets_ and of art union • tickets is carried on 'by a number ot , enterprising young ladies. Before the banoai , was formally do. olared open last night the Eev. Father Smyth (administrator of Tlionidon) stat'iii what tho three parishes aimed at in holding it. It was hoped, he said, thut at the conclusion tho Wadestown Church would be free of debt; also, that enough would have been contributed for tho commencement of a church building nt Karori South, and enough for tho erection of additional accommodation iu Ihu Catholic School a,t Northland,

His Grave tho Archbishop said that ho had predicted success for many a church bnzaar, nnd his predictions had always beou fulfilled. Ho would venture- to predict good fortune for tho present ono also,' nnd he sincerely hoped , that ho would not prove to have been mistaken.

One of the most interesting features of the bazaar is tho tiig-ot'-war competi-

tion. Provision has been made for a contest conducted upon the most up-to-diite'lines. There are sixteen teams entered, each consisting of four men and n, captain. The plank laid for tho pull is elevated so as to be clearly in the view of everyone, and is equipped with stout batons, fiet at intervals of six 1 inches. There is a special starting <levico to ensure that no team has an unfair advantage, and the pulls are limited to five minutes, with tho proviso that a two-foot advantage at any stage is sufficient for a win. The referees are Mr. James Doyle and Mr. D. Leslie. Mr. D. M'Phee is time-keeper.

The teams that pulled last evening were those captained by Police-Sergeant Wado iind Messrs. Gloeson, Fleming, and Quirk respectively. In the first pull Gleeson's team, weighing 47st. 1131b., met Fleming's team, -17st. 131b. Fleming's team won in Imin. 42sec, pulling tho full advantage of 2 feet. In the second pull there was an exciting contest between Quirk's team, 47st. 101b., and Wade's team, <tSst. Wadp's side gained an inch at the start, but lost it. They gained two inches a little later, but lost it, The struggle continued strenuously, and at the end of five minutes Wade s men .had an advantage of six inches. Other teams will pull later. Tfio. semi-final will be reached ou Wednesday and the final on Thursday next.
