TRENTHAM RACES

PROSPECTS FOR. TO-DAY. [By Qt,bncoi3.] ' The Autumn Meeting of the Wellington Racing Club will be opened to-day, land will be concluded.on 'Saturday. The weather promises to be fine, and as the tracks are in perfect order and the fields good there should be some fast racing to-day. Special trains will leave Lambton Station at i). 55 a.m., 10.3' a.m., 10.17 a.m., 10.30 a.m., and 12.G p.m.

The racing will start at 11.30 a.m., and the last race will be got off at J. 30 p.m. There are six acceptors in the . Hack Hurdles, one mile' and throe-quarters, and all are likely to go to the post. .Recent form points to iliiltieipal, list." 41b., and Pap'anui, 9st. Kill), Munster, Hst. 111b., is bred to jump, and he may iinish in a place. S. Henderson, will be on Miilticipal and H.lorigan on Papanui. The St. Leger is regarded as another match between Star Lnily and Afterglow. It is- thought that tho last-named will do better in Deeley's hands, but there is "no doubt ■as to the merit of her opponent, and leaving out her Oaks form she has raced as well as Afterglow in handicaps, which makes it look as if the contest will be a good one. ■ There is a high-class held' in tho Nursery Handicap. Amythas, 9st, nib., was successful with Gib. less on his back at Wanganui, but tho ckiss behind him was not equal to what he will encounter to-day. However, ho. is such a good finisher that he is sure to take a hand in the race at the right end. Murihiku, Bst. 101b., will bo ridden by Gray, and has her Ullerslie form to recommend her.

Other recont winners engaged are Nightraider, who has a big name at Uiccarron, fted Pepper, and Muronne. It looks like a contest between the top weights and with a useful pull in, the handicaps the Chokcboro colt may be the best. •

All the twenty-one acceptors are likely to go to the post for tho Thompson Handicap, one mile. The track efforts of the fancied candidates have been very good, and yesterday Sasanof, Spanner, and Hebekah all ran identically the same gallops, hut if anything Spanner .eeenird to go. the best as lleoley was trying to keep him at three-quarter pace. Sasanof ran five furlongs in lmin. Isec, and Gray had the top woighl. out as for as he could get him, so his effort was also a good one. ■ Snsanof, 9st; 91b., has a very big weight to begin with, and in such , a big field he may not get the best of passages. Punka, Sst". 91b., lias a good following, and she can bn depended upon 16 race well, lied liibbon ran well at Jticcarton oil the h'rst day, but she then lightened- u|) a lot, and has gone uiit of favour. Mascot, 7st. Kllb., is very nicely placed in the. Handicap, and such a good linishcr will surely show up in a fast-rim race. Spanner, 7st. 121b., may rival Kasanof for the position of favourite. He has mado many iriends since his arrival hero, and- the fact that Deeley is to steer him is a lot in his favour. Battle Song has been working very well and beating Bonny Maid on tho tracks. liobekah has'only got to improve a trifle on her Ellerslio form to bo in. it al; the h'nish. Taken altogether, if looks as if the contest is very open, and outside of the.l:!in;e favourites"anything will givo « good return. The field in the Challenge Stakes will consist.of Gloaming, Affectation, JRoynl Stag, and Wurplane. Deoloy will be on (jloaiuing, Gray on Affectation, Morris on Witrphue, mil) G, Yo!ii)&' on Tioyn) Stag. Tlievo is nothing to indicate that Gloauv ing is nut as well as ever he was, so lie is sure to be at a short price to-day.

liisingiiiuii and Cooing, tlic top weights in the Hilverstream Handicap, have both shown good form of lale. Others with followings to-day arc Imaribbon, whom it is declared will do a lot better than ill; fillcrslic, and 'Warlike. The histnamed is a delicate sort that may want time. '

Wiilinnhio mid Aero miiy divide favouritisiii for llio Riiilwny Hniuliuiip, ami runny of those who ' wore at Feildiiii; iii'guo Unit the I'ordell horso will rnverso tlio form there. Torfrcila and Demos may not show to advantage on the «tralglit course, but Lionskin - mid Old (jiulil will havo plenty of HUiiport, as will 80-Pcqp,'whogenerally races well on the Trenthaiu course.

The Tinakori Jliindieuii, six furloiißs, lms mi acceptance of fourteen, but they uvo not a goud Int. The two lop weights havn bolli hesu in'tlio limelight lately, as. haa The Spenker, who scored in the open sprint' at •'Wnipiikin-aii. Black Mark pulled up soro yesterdn.v, but if he competes to-day lie will be in a forward position m he is an improving horse. Bonvilli) and Astinome were both winners at Tiuiliernnikan last week. .The former is a (joint galloper, but is brokenwindeil, and as this is Hie, last event and will take plate when the atmosphere is heavy she will be found out over the final pinch. Astinonic will havn the services of the light-weight, B. S. Bagby, and will not be neglected on the. machine.
