. 1 SCHEME FOR UNIVEESITY EDUCATION.-' Mention was made at yesterday's meeting of the War Belief Association of a scheme introduced by Dr. Biddell for ,£50,000 Co provide fifty scholarships for fifty childrenVpf soldiers \ who made the supreme sacrifice during the war. Mr. S.' Kirkcaldie introduced the subject, and stated that there were approximately 2135 such children in New Zealand, and if. was Dr. J, E. Eiddell's intention to endeavour to raise a special eum, quite aside from, that- now being raised per medium of the Trentham Art Union, of .£5.000 to provide fifty scholarships for a like number of children. Dr. Eiddell had approached the/Hawke's Bay Patriotic Society/ which body had unanimously decided to grant J55000 for' these special scholarships. Dr. Eiddell stated that this scheme was quite separate from the Trentham .Art Union scholarships, and for a start he was endeavouring to obtain 'sufficient money to provido for fifty scholarships. These scholarships would enable a child to go right through and complete histraning for any profession. In reckoning the cost the medical profession had been taken as a 'basis, and it had been agreed that these scholarships would cost anything from .£BOO to £1000. The speaker had met with magnificent success in Hawke's Bay, where the Patriotic Society liad unanimously made n grant of £5000 for the training of five children. Dr. Eiddell intended to t.our New Zealand, and approach the various patriotic bodies in order to obtain the Bum required. He quite realised the position of the association, and he would l>9 pW if tho committee could see'its way clear to grant 'a sum of £3000. Upon the motion of Mr. J. Hutcheson, the meeting went into committee, to diuouss tho matter in detail. Mr. S. Kirkcaldie moved, on the resumption of tho meeting, that a scccial meeting of the association be held on Wednesday next for the purpose of' granting Dr. Eiddell's application.
