There is now only a skeleton crew on the vessel. None of the cases is reported to bo serious, and thoro aro no signs of the pneumonic type of tho malady amongst tho sufferers. The Union Company havo no announcement to make respecting the future movements of the 'Vessel or regarding tho discharge of her cargo. There are not passenirer? on the vessel. Tho Manuka is to move into the quarantine area near Somes Island to-day and will remain at anchor there indefinitely. STANDARDISED MACHINERY. ■ One of Glasgow's loading newspapers publishes tho following interesting article on tho standardisation of marine engines: The first size of machinery adopted in 'the Government's scheme of standard shipbuilding was'capable of developing about 2500 indicated horse-power under normal conditions, and about 3COD horsepower for a short period in an emergency. Tho designs were prepared and issued to the contractors within'a few weeks of the instruction being issued to the leading firms, andi the first vessel fitted with standard engines was ready for sea within eight months of the order beinij placed. The. programme has now been extended 'to include larger vessels of greater power, 1 and' also vessels down to the coaster size. .But the number of types of engines has been kept down to the minimum. They do inot excccd half a dozen, as engines of tho samo sizo aro being fitted in many different types of vessels, which are built specially to suit particular trades. Experience' has proved the real advantages of standardised machinery. For instance, engines and boilers have frequently been transferred from one firm to another in order to expedite delivery. In many cases where engines and boilers have been damaged by enemy, action they have been replaced without los 3 of time by standard engines and boilers ready to hand, thus greatly expediting tho completion ot, repairs. In many cases, too, a part oi an engine has been sent from one firm to another to expedite tho completion of a particular set of machinery. Perhaps one of the most important advantages of the standardisation of merchant, ship engines is that it has enabled the Plant and labour of a number of inland firms, to be utilised. A largo number of theso firms aro now making standard engines. A further development has been the grouping of tho firms into classes, each of which concentrates its efforts on a- few sizes of machinery best fitted to its workshops and Tiiant. This enables these firms to go in for repetition work extensively and to obtain, a high output.
