THE HARVEST IN THE SOUTH
PSICES FOR STOCK. .Writing in the last issue of the "Farmers' Advocate," "Agricola" says:— "In tlio south the weather has been changeable and the harvesting lias been hindered very considerably. Thestooks were wetted by the heavy showers and as there has been little wind down there the sheaves have not dried out well. It is stated that the harvest has never, been known to bo in eo many stages at once m tii? southern. districts. Some are thrashing, others are stacking, and there are still a few who are reaping. It is not likelv that all the work will bo finished this month. In Otago the weather has hindered the harvest somewhat, but the rains that have fallen have done good to the roots. It is, ho\v-», ever, too late for the turnips to grow into a really good crop anywhere, and they will be a scarco commodity all over the island this year. Good patches, there are, but they are not numerous, and the most 41 them will be needed for the ewes in the winter. Farmers are not, ttierefore, buyers. On the other hand thcs are anxiousi to get rid of anything .'l.h< l 't"will go into the works. They are only retaining what they can easily 'and •a'afely winter. It is'thought by many that prices will recover somewhat in the spring, though the old values may not be reached. Indeed, it is not advisable that prices should go as high as they were., It is better for everyone to nave values a little lower and mora settled. The matter is rendered worse by the fact that the export buyers are not buying as rapidly as they usually do. ; They have not the same go in them n.t.all. The various works are not; /getting rid of their stuff; as'they'should do owing- to the shipping difficulty,, and this has depressed both fat and store .prices. ,-■■■■.
