The annual reunion of the Falmerston North Ketunieil. Soldiers' Association, which was held on. Aiiisac Day was largely .attended. The president (Mr. B. J; Jacobs) was in the chair, and associated with him were Mr. J A. Mash, M;P., Colonel M'Donald, Major Onrnor (Veterans' Association), arid Colonel I'nngle. In proposing the toast of the ■issncintion Colonel M'Donald urged 'that tlw Govarnmeut should mate n presentation of a block of land to each returned soldier who wanted'to go fanning, and to lend him sufficient capital free of interest ivith-which to work if. rhie was, he jiointed out, done in the early days, and ft could be done now. They were,doing it in ■ some other countries. . Response ivas made by Mr. D. Veriion. Spencer at the piano. ■ In connection with the conference' held lately regarding the Gorge Road, Mr. G. H.-Smith, M.P. for Pahiatua, has written to Mr. j. A. Nash, M.P., for Palmerston, (o tho effect that he , is preparing a local bill dealing with the matter, Mr. Smith suggests that the Bill is one which should be taken iip by,the Government, and'pointe out that-a precedent exists .for this in the case of the Hutt 'Road Act.. Failing the Government taking up the measure, Mr Smith suggests that as Palmerston North is the most interested constituency, that the .loo.il' member should present the Bill, and in'this Mr'. Nash acquiesced;
Mr. Ken. Russell,- son of Mr. and Mrs.A. Russell, of Palmerston, has returned to New Zealand' after an absence of four yoars. Two lads, Eric Hamell and Ernest Brazier, were committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington at Otaki last week fov placing an obstruction in the shape of a gate on the railway line at Paraparauniu on April 10. Evidence showed that the train crashed into, the obstruction, but little damage was done. Both lads pleaded guilty, and were allowed out on bail in the eiim of .£IOO each. At. its meeting on Saturday the Palmerston branch of the Farmers' Tlniou, on tho motion of Mr. A Buchanan, decided to forward the following'resolution to the School Committees' Association: "That the! Government he requested to arrange that political econpmy be taught to adTaiiced pupils of primary, technical, and kiKh schools.
The adjourned annual meeting of tho Palmereton North branch or the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held ut Palinerston on Saturday. Mr. J. A. H'Leavcy presided over a good attendanco The balance-sheet, which was adopted, disclosed that tho receipts amounted to £i 103., and the oxpenditure JM). The secretary reported that the sum of .£ls was- . outstanding in members' subscriptions. The mintues of the Inst meeting of the Manawatu Hub-provincial executive were read, embodying a nilniber of remits, including one from tho Tβ Horo branch relative to a proposed amendment in the constitution of the organisation, which was described by one delegate aB "very pretty, but not practical. '• According to the chairmnn the aims and objects of the union were the same as those embodied in the resolution, onlv they were not expressed in "such flowery language." Hn moved that in the opinion of the meeting tho present rules of the union are acceptable as the etnm*. The motion was ■■ carried unanimously, mid tho remit repected. Another remit rejected was a proposal to establish a farmers' lnbour exchange under the auspices of the union,, which several members described as premature.
