TRAGEDY AT MIRAMAR

TWO MEN KILLED AT THE GAS WORKS

CRANE OVERTURNED

A serious accident, attended with fatal results, occurred nt the Wellington Gas Company's works, at Miramar, at !).3fl a.m. on Saturday, whereby two men were instantly killed and one injured. The men were engaged in- hoisting coal when a crane overturned aim Tell. Two men, John I'errell and J. Mann, were on the crane at the time. Mann jumped clear of the machine, and sustained such injuries as necessitated his removal to the hospital. I'efrell, nn elderly man, fell with the crane, nncl was killed instantly. Another man, named Churchill, was also instantly killed, the crane jib falling on him in its descent. Ferrell was a resident of Eoseneath, and was an elderly man with , a grown-up family. Churchill was a single man, and lived with friends in Owen Street. He had no relatives in {he Dominion, but his mother is. livinx in England. J. Mann, whose injuries, are very painful, but not dangerous. iSja married man residing at Miramar, and has a young family. He has been.in the Gas Company's employ einco he was a lad.

Immediately word of tho accident reached town the chief officers o£ fhe company hastened to Miramar. The police also were in attendance, and everything possible done. The hospital .reports that Mann was slightly easier yesterday. An inquest will be hold to-day. TRAGIC SEO.UEL TO SOME "SKYLARKING,,, MAN KILLED IN WILLIS STREET John Eednll, a married man, aged 35, was killed on Saturday afternoon by a fall to the ground from a.fire-escape on the third floor of the Carlton Hotel. It appears that the deceased haa ween staying at the hotel for some time. Early on. Saturday a-fternoon he was "skylarking" on the third floor with two friends. He attempted to enter their bedroom via the fire-escape, but just as he was getting in he slipped and fell, sustaining fatal injuries. He died in the hospital very eoon afterwards. He is stated to have been a man ot temperate ligbits. An inquest will be held at 5 o'clock tliis afternoon.

A man named William Francis Goddard, who resides at Williams Street, Wadestown, had his collarbone dislocated while he was playing football on Saturday. . He was removed to the hospital.

DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, April 2G. ■ The inquest on John Gordon Forbes, who died soma days ago Tvhile under an anaesthetic for teeth extraction, concluded to-day. The jury's verdict was that death was due to syncope, no blame being attachable to anyone.
