SITTINGS IN NAPIER. V. Ry Telegraph—l»rpt>s Association. Napier, April 28. The Intluntrio.s' Committee sat in Napier to-day. The first evidence tendered concerned the tobacco' industry. Vari-' ous witnesses stated that Hawke'a Bay and Nelson-grown tobacco was excellent, and it would pay farmers, to grow the ,crop. Government help should I'.o given to this new industry. A. B. FiO.loyor, manager of the Hawko's Bay Tobacco Company, thought that tho company ivae entitled to a return of duty paid. r J. H. Edmondson, manager of the Acetone Company, complained of the duty paid on the plant and of the excessive rnihviiv freights. C. H. Edwards, manager.of the Napier Gas Company, said that his company was living from hand to mouth as far as coal supplies were concerned. Ho urged State vessels should carry State coal. He thought an increase in freight was nnncessary. S. Harris, cap manufacturer, complained "f Hi" A X cPssi>'n railway freights. David AVhyte, Hasting, asked that tho Mining Act' should he amended in Hie direction of improving mining leases. A smelting and bullion plant and a mint should be established in Wellington.
