WATERSIDE WORKER'S DEATH
KILLED BY A MOTOR-LORRY. Before Mv.' F. V. Frazer, S.M., at tlie Magistrate's Court yesterday, an inquest was held on Hie body of John Herbert Ward, a waterside worker, who met his death oil Jervois Quay on Thursday at noon, John Lawler said that lm worked with deceased on the wharf on 'Thursday morning. At noon they left the wharf to go home for lunch-, and deceased got on the back of a mo!or-lo.i:r.v, and witness sot on tho front of the vehicle. When tho lorry was nearing tlie Tire Brigade Station, witness jumped off, tlie driver slowing down as he did so. Witness called to tho deceased to get off as tho lorry was not going further. The deceased then made an attempt to jump off, but slipped,' and ono wheel of the lorry passed over him from bis feet to his bead. Deceased was carried into the premises of Messrs. Hutcheson and Wilson, and died shortly afterwards. Witness stated that tho driver of the lorry was in no way to blame for the accident. Charles. Pettit. driver of the motorlorry, and employed by Messrs. A. S. Patergon and Co., stated that he was unaware that deceased was on the lorry. The lorry was not .travelling at more than five miles an hour. .11l delivering his verdict of accidental (loath, Mr. l''imer said that'the whole tiling was a most distressing accident., and that no blame was attachable to anyone.
