Captain William Hardbnm, Y.C., been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal. He has served for over twenty years iu the forces.
Among those who relurnoil by the' Mnheno yesterday was the well-known Padre Walls, M.C., who For some two years and a half was associated with the 2nd Wellington Battalion in much of their heaviest fighting. Padre Walls's old comrades will he pleased to know that he has made a. fplendid recovery, and no longer needs the assistance of a crutch ii^getting about. It is interesting to noto that Padre Walls is the second, New Zealand Salvation Army chaplain to win the Military Cross, but the whole 6ix who have represented the Salvation Army with the N.Z-E.l''. have won golden opinion from all ranks.
The Wellington Hospital awl Charitable Aid Board, at its meeting yesterday placed 011 rccord its appreciation of the services of the retiring medical superintendent, Dr. \\ r . J. Barclay. The chairman (Mr. It. Baldwin) and other members spoke very highly of. Dr. Barclay, and expressed the hopo that in- his new sphere of work (which is to bo a private practice in Invercjrgill) he will nave every success. "Wellington's loss will be Invercargill's gain." was the tenor of all the observations made with reference to the superintendent's departure. 'l'lie board approved the appointment of Dr. \V. J. H. liislup, who is to be released from military duty,. to the position of temporary superintendent, pending the arrival of the permanent appointee, Dr. Woodhouso. Thedeath is announced at .Bournemouth, England, of Mr. George Ciray Russell, aged 90, formerly of tho'iirm of Russell, Ritchie and Co., of Diinedin, which business was taken over in 1878 by the National Mortgago and Agency Company. The deceased gentleman took a keen interest in public affairs, especially educational matters. "Lieutenant Gordon Harcourt, youngest son of Mr. J>. B. Harcourt, who left with the Twentieth Reinforcements, and has been on continuous service in France, arrived back by the Maheno yesterday morning. „ Lieutenant Harcourt was with the advance of tho New Zealanders at Cologne,'whence lie was invalided to England. ■ A Press Association telegram from Auckland announces the death, at tho age .of 74, of Mr. William J. Speight, diocesan secretary, and M.P. for Auckland East in .1879. A Press Association message from Diinedin states that at a public meeting last night the Rev. Vincent King, who has taken a prominent part in social work for many years, and who rendered invaluable service during the influenza epidemic, was presented with a motor-car, a chequo for over ,6100, and a deposit slip for JJIOOO invested with perpetual trustees in recognition, of his services. ■ Advice has been received that Mr. H. L. Fox, sou of Mr. 11. A. Fox, Office Appliance Co., who left New Zealand with tho Thirty-first Reinforcement in 1917, and was invalided to England from France, is now attached to tho N.Z. Expeditionary Forces 'Educational Staff in England, with the rank of first-class warrant officer.
