I Robert i James Christopher ' Seal, a vtoterside worker, pleaded guilty to carrying a loaded,revolver, in breach' of Knction frof the , War Rpßulntions, to.nssnultinjj James Smith Vial; a,nd to heinpt in the Grand Hotel and Barrett's Hotel ■after closing hoiire.' • Rcnl explained that he borrowed the revolver from a friend on Thursday last, and being "unable to obtain bknk cartridges filed down'the bullets of live cartridges, 'but' was ' unablo to extract the bullets from :all the cartHdges. Uβ was not sober when, lie went to the hotels, ho had no intention of using the revolver tin anyone, and asked the Magistrate k> take a lenient view of .the case as being the ••foolish act of a foolish man. His Worship thought the explanation was'a reasonable one. and that tl)« man had no intention of using the weapon. Seal was convicted and discharged for carryinK a londed revolver, and was fined jEI on each of the other three charges. OTHER CASES. " Charles Clarke, a member of the crew nf the ■s.s. STararoa. pleaded guilty to the theft of a quantity of tea and biitt«r, valued at 5s.V .the property of tho Union S.S. Co., and was sentenced to fourteeu days' imprisonment. } . John Goovge M'Kendnck, alias John Snain, was charged that on Mirch 28, 1«18 at Wellington, he obtained trom W. Hihireth the' sum of by means of a valueless cheque., Tp this charge he pleaded guilty, and. was sentenced to six w°eks' imprisonment. .1! Kendnch was also charged that on .March 26, 1019 « Wellington, he forged the name ot I'. Jones to a cheque for £1, and uttered thfc same to Alexander Paul and Cecil W Haseldean. It was stated in the ovid Mice of John L. Francis, bank clerk, Auckland; that the accused opened an account, with the Bank of he* .South Wales, Auckland, on Jul.V2B. 1918;, in the name of John Spain, and that the account was closed on September 2/, 1918, by tho exhaustion of funds. 1 The cheque purporting to bo signed by F. Jones wns •presented for payment, and returned marked "no account." There was no ono of the,name of F. Jon« with a current nncbuhf at' tho .Bank 9 f New South Wale* 'Auckland. At this stage the further ■hearing of the case was adjourned f °Tama= ei Arthur. Pollard,' charged with stealing a numbor of musical . instru meiits, wns further remanded for a week, for- insobriety, eight first offenders had their bail of IDs. each forfeited; an old-n"e..pension'er was convicted a.nrt dis"mv°pd and another first offender was fined , 55., in default 21 hours' impnsonmjnh'n Svmons, for discharging offensive matter in Molcsworfh Street, was fined £2. in default seven-days' imprisonment, and on a similar charge, but with extenuating circumstances, George Snvile was fined 20a., with the option of 72 hours in' guol. •
