AND ME. J. P. LUKE'S ACTION. "I am not going to mince matters," said Mr. W. ±£. i». Barber at Island Hay last evening, in referring to the number of . candidates contesting the Mayoralty. "Mr. Luke told iiie two years ago he would not be a candidate. He also told several councillors that he did not intend to stand, and that being tho caso. there were 1 no fewer than four councillors proposed to stand for tho Mayoralty. They were: Councillors M'Kenzie, Norwood, Frost, and Barber. As they did not wish to disagree amongst themselves they all agreed to leave it to the members of the council. They held two meetings and bad done him the honour to nominate him for tho Mayoralty,, "and I'm going to see it through," said Mr. Barber. (Hear, hear.) Mr; Barber went on to say that when Mr. Luke contested the Mayoralty against Mr. M'Laren he had argued against a man retaining the office for more than one term, when that term was only one year. .Now it was two years, and if Mr. Luke was again returned he would have been' in office for eight years.
