, —ft—. -— . A LOADED REVOLVER. Messrs, I. Salek and D. Keir, Justices of the Peace, presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning and dealt with the police cases. i ' James Christopher Seal, a waterside worker, had four charges preferred against him: carrying. firearm's in contravention of the War Regulations, assaulting James Smith Vial, being oil licensed premises (the Grand Hotel) after hours, and a similar charge in respect to/Barrett's Hotel. Acting-Sub-Inspector Emerson asked for a remand until to-day, and in doing so said that Seal, for some reason, went to tho Grand' Hotel after closing hours and said that he desired to see a member of the staff of the hotel. Seal was.met on the stairs by tho licensee, who ordered him off the premises, but'the man declined to go and attempted to strike the licensee. A barman" then made his appearance and Seal drow a revolver loaded in each chamber. A struggle followed, tho chamber of the revolver was thrown open, and thTee cartridges fell out on the floor. Seal recovered the cartridges and ■ later went to Barrett's Hotel where ho I was arrested by' Constable R. Smith. The I bullets in the cartridges had been filed down level with the cases, but quite enough lead remained to inflict a fatal wound. Seal stated'that he had U6ed the revolver, to start races at a picnic. The request for a remand was granted' (ind bail was fixed at SZfS and two sureties of ,£23 each. : ; ILL-TREATING A DOG! "* James Kennedy Mooney pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, also to a .charge of having cruelly ill-treated a dog. The accused-stated that ho was so drunk, that he Remembered very little about the ,dog, and nothing whatever of having ill-treated it. The dog had been given to him by a friend. Acting-Sub-Inspectqr- Emerson stated that a lady and gentleman saw Mooney in the act of twisting the dog's legs so severely as to almost break them, causing the animal to. howl in agony. Mooney apparently waiited the dog to follow him, for he later pulled, the dog along by a string tied, round the animal's neck.. On,'the. charge of drunkenness Mooney was convicted, and discharged, and for iil-treating the dog'he was fined ,£3, with the alternative of one week's imprisonment. . OTHER CASES. For insobriety three firstroft'enders were convicted and discharged and three otherß who failed to appear were ordered to forfeit their bail (10s. each). Douglas Wilkinson, cgainst whom there was oneprevious conviction, was fined 10s., in default 24 hours' • imprisonment. John.Shannon and John Joseph Patrick O'Connell,.-, firemen on the- s.s. ■Athenic; were each -fined 205., with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonment, for disorderly behaviour in. Maimers Street, while drunk. George Patrick M'Namara pleaded guilty to having been found drunk in Vivian Street, also with having used obscene language. He was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and for the use of obscene language was' fined &% y with the option of three days imprisonment.
