EASTER RESULTS AT MASTERTON
The "Master rally," which attracted chess players to Mastcrton from AVauganui, Wellington, and various centres' in the AVairarapa, was a decided success. The tine weather enabled the visitors to make tho most ot' the limited time available for sight-seeing, and the pleasure of their stay in Mastcrton was greatly enhanced through the medium of many kind "hospitalities extended by the local committee, of which Mr. G. A. .Tones is the chairman, and Mr. A. Glomus the indefatigable lion, secretary. Mrs. Oleums and her assistants were unremitting iu the matter of providing refreshments during the five sessions of play. A' dinneil' was held 011 Saturday evening, the toast list including: "The King," "Chess" (Messrs. Barnes, Kelling, and 0. C. Pleasants), "Tho Visitors" (Messrs. AV. IT. Jackson and A. AV. 0. Davies). "Our Soldiers" (Mr. Lee), "Other Sports" (Messrs. I l '. P. Welch and Grundy), and "The Press" (Messrs. G. Svkes. M.P., and J. A. Council). Messrs. Kunim'er (2), Benton, 0. C. Pleasants, Oliver, and Shaw supplied cars 011 Sunday afternoon for a motor trip, which included Carterton, Gladstone, and the coif links (the view from which., was greatly admired).'' The -play, which was at the rate of twenty moves per hour, was of a high standard, and it was good tg see players with reputations being , frequently extended bv less-known exponents of the name. It had previously been decided that in the event of a tie the trophy should go lo tho team scoring the greater. ■ number of gnmes. Mr. Barnes (captain), returned thanks for the. i'elicit atioiis.. extended to the winning teani at Ihe'vind-up function, when several of the visitors took the opportunity to congratulate the Mastcrton Club on the very successful organising and carrying out nf what, is understood to be the first "chess rally" held in the Dominion. The supplementary event was a handicap tourney for those who were not engaged in the major contest. There were sixteen competitors, of whom three were sous of Mr. Clemas—aged thirteen, twelve, and ten respectively. These lads have already acquired some very good ideas 011 the game, and are showing decided promise. This contest was ultimately won by Mr. 11. E. Asliby, of tho South AVellinglon Club, he being the "hist survivor" in the play amongst winners. He was very hard pressed by Messrs. Gilesj. senr., and Staff-Sergeant Travis, who, with Master B. Clemas, were the runners-up.
CROQUET » NORTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT.. /By .Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, April- 21. Play was continued tu-day in connection with the North Island croquet tournament, which is being held at Palmerston under the , auspices of tho Manuwatu Bowling and Croquet Club. A feature of the day's play was the success of Miss Laurenson, of the Manawatu Club, a first year's player, in beating Mrs. Acheson, a very experienced competitor from Hawke's Bay, who has a doughty record. Results:— Champion Singles. Mrs. I'egler beat- Miss A, 11. L. Smith by 3. Mrs. Iligg beat Mrs. Fuller by 12. Mr. G. It. King beat .1. Pollock by 113. Miss Laurenson beat Jfrs. Acheson by I. Handicap Doubles. Mrs. M'Rae and Sirs. .Bemlall beat Mrs. Blackburne and Miss Randolph by G. Mrs. Baxter and Mrs. Guthrie beat Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Ball by 12. Mrs. Beamish and Mrs. Clarkson beat Mrs. Rathbone and Mrs. Limbrick'by U. Mr. Strattou and Mrs. Clark beat, Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. K. Sl'Donald by 14. Handicap Singles. Second Round.—Mrs.- Henderson .beat Mrs. Richardson by -1; Mrs. Rigg bent lliss Limbrick by -IG. Third. Round—Mrs. Watt beat Mrs. Clarkson by 12; Miss Randolph won from Mrs. Hamilton by default.
