"PLAYING THROUGH"
SPORTING CHAMPIONSHIPS
ITS ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES (By a Correspondent of the London "Times."} The question of "Hie Holder Playing Through" was a freely-discussed point in many games, but especially, perhaps, in lawn tennis before the war. It will bo interesting to see in the ease of these competitions, which aro to be renewed after a suspension of four years, whether or not those responsible for their Management, will make any change. There will be two points to lie considered— first whether the players who won tho events four years ago shall be considered holders still, and lis such entitled to to defend their titles, and secondly, whether the olil system of the holder standing out be done away with altogether. In the amateur billiards championship, no change is. apparently contemplated. In 'the amateur tennis championship, to lie played at Queen's Club. West Kensington, 011 April 28. Mr. E. M. Baerlein. who won in lflH, has announced that if he competes he would prefer to go through the event, and not stand out. One lias not heard so far any discussion about idle important lawn competitions. Of course, standing out is really an illogical proceeding. A championship is n championship, and all should start 011 Ihe same terms to find Hie truest test of skill and stamina, but the custom of the holder not playing ill the preliminary rounds is hallowed by long tradition, and many, although they do not. defend it. confess that they would not like to fen it altered.
