Mr. Hercules Davidson, of 0 Hiropi Street, and until a few years ago ohiel accountant to the New Zealand Unilun) Department, died in Christcmirch on Good Pridav. Though of a nmot, retiring disposition, Mr. Davidson possessed nualities which earned for him the icimrd of all with whom lie came in contact, lie was a brilliant accountant and tho monumental work he did as clue accountant for the Railways is regarded as a standard in the service with which he was connected for oier forty years. The deceased iras BO years of age, and when he left for the south a few d. > ago was in his ordinary good health. Word was received yesterday that he was only ill for four hours. The cause ot death was heart failure, Mr. Davidson did not allow his talents to rust s ice he retired from the Government service. For the wist four years lie had performed va'uaole- honroary work 10) the Wellington War Belief- Association, who greatly appreciated the skilled services so generously given, and in connection with the epidemic of November last. Mr. Davidson was entrusted by Hie Mavor with the sorting out of the accounts and the preparation of a balancesheet. Mr. Davidson had many warni friends in Wellington, who will deplore his sudden death.

Mr J. C. Burns, M.A., first assistant at Newtown .School, who lias been promoted to the hcadniastcrsup of the Karon School, was farewelled by the teachers and ex-teacher, of the former scliuol prior to his departure. On behalf of the f-tafi, Mr. h. H Ward presented Mr. Burns with a complete set of K. L. Stevenson s works, and referred to Mr. Burns s success as first assistant, and to his keen interest in the spurts of the children. The scholars of StariNrd VI also presented Mr. Burns with a parting, gift, in the form of a collection of books. \
