"Galloper Smith/' .otherwise Sir P. 13. Smith, has galloped to the Woolsack, and is Lord Chancellor at -Ml. It is unkindly suggested that his .appointment was made to kill by shock .tho large number of ex-Lords Chancellor still living and drawing large pensions, and thus to savo th'j country's money.

There arc gradations in these matters," says tho "Morning Post." There are now five ex-Lords Chancellor, the first four of irhoni are drawing pensions of i3oo:— . Lord HaUbury, pensioned since 15M15. ■ Lord Loreburn, pensioned since 1012. Lord Haldane. pensioned since 1915. Lord Buckmaster, pensioned since 191 G. ' Lord Finlay on acccpting (he Lord Chancellorship in 191G, stipulated that ho should not draw the pension on retirement.
