THE EPIDEMIC IN AUSTRALIA QUARANTINE RULES FEDERAL DEMAND FOR STATES' CO-OPERATION Melbourne, April 17. The Acting-Fcderal Prime Minister, Mr. W. A. Watt, has sent a message to those States which are not co-operating with the Commonwealth in ,the inatten of the quarantine regulations, threateninir to divert tounage to routos offering more continuous employment until tho Stale Governments concerncd are prepared to withdraw their quarantine regulations.—Press Assn. RACING FIXTURES. Sydney, April 17. Cabinet is prepared to introduce special legislation to validate tho holding of the the Australian Jockey Club's meeting outside tho time provided by the Gaming Act, but will await tho effect upon the influenza epidemic of the suspension of business during Easter before it makes its final .decision. There is little likelihood. however, that the relaxation of the restrictions will permit the meeting to bo held at an early date, if it is held at all.—Press Assn. THE SHOPS CLOSURE. April 18, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, April 18. The Moeiuki sailed at seveu o'clock last evening with'cargo only. The passages were refunded, and all further, bookings stopped—Press Assn. Many of tho Moeraki's passengers are keenly disappointed at their inability to reach New Zealand. A. prominent medical man who claims to speak on behalf of a- substantial seelion of tho city's practitioners, declares that masks and inoculation are useless against influenza. The Australasian Conference of Fruitgrowers, to bo held at Brisbane in May, has been postponed owing to the influenza epidemic.—Press Assn. NIAGARA'S PASSENGERS AND CREW ILLNESS RAPIDLY, ABATING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, April 17. No new cases of influenza occurred at the Motuihi quarantine station yesterday among the passengers and • crew of the Niagara. Tho indications point to the illness rapidly abating. Thirty of the early cases, having completed the quarantine period aro to be released today. As a number of contacts were released yesterday it is anticipated that a larger number will bo given their discharge to-day. As far as is known, all the crew of the Niagara, with the exception of ten stewards, will be permitted to rejoin the vessel before it leaves Auckland. FIJI DECLARED CLEAN. By Telecraph—Press Association. Dunedinj April 17. Regarding influenza, the Jnion Steam Ship Company has been officially advised that the health authorities' at Fiji have declared that colony to be clean. In referring to the epidemic at hi<3 meeting on Thursday evening, the Mayor of Karori (Mr. B. G. H. Burn) said that when the epidemic was raging last year the Government instructed the local bodies to spare no expense, but to save the lives of the people. But- should thcro be a recurrence of the epidemic then the ratepayers must stand the expense, and Karori would have to bear its sharethat share would be fixed by (he Charitable Aid Board.' Mr. ■ Burn contended that the epidemic was not a local nut a national question. The Government was peculiar in its ways; It never encouraged the thrifty 'people, for the more the people tried to save the more they were penalised. It was the ratepayers who would have to pay if the epidemic came here again. He insisted that the increased levies of the Charitable Aid Board should be ' resisted. The City Council had taken up the matter seriously, and it must be supported by all local bodies.
