MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

MEETING AT ISLAND BAY. • A largely-attended meeting was held on Wednesday evening fit the. Island Bay Boiling Club's Pavilion for the purpose of considering the advisability 'of forming a committeo for furthering ithe interests of Councillor J. 0. Shorland for/ the forthcoming municipal election, and Mr. A. S. Collins for a seat as citizens' ■ representative on the Wellington Harbour Board.' Councillor Shorland gave a short account of his doings during his pterin of office, and answored several questions which, were put to him on some of the larger matters of . municipal'interest. Dialing with the housing question lie i Bt/itcd that something must bo done at jonce to relieve the, situation, which is 1 already most serious, and likely to become worse. Ono solution, suggested was that when large . business concerns wero established in any district it should be incumbent upon them to provide a certain proportion of accommodation for the bands that they would employ. Some of "the largest 'manufacturers at Home have provided accommodation for their employees in this way, and. the system is proving to bo financially self-supporting, and very much in the interests of the employees. fiLr. Collijjg_wa6 also invited to place his' claims before those present, and in doing so stated that ho had twenty years' practical experience on the waterfront in .Wellington, and could fairly claim to be . alivo to the conditions and needs of the port. One of the problems 'that ho has given a lot of consideration 'ami is keen to tackle is the miUtor of casual employment oil the waterfront. In his opinion the present system is neither economical from the standpoint of the business community, nor satisfactory to the men em- ' ployed. His idea of a solution is to employ a large percentage of these men on ■ e, permanent basis, and if necessary to enter into some arrangement with the Government for utilising some of the surplus labour during this slack season. At the conclusion of the meeting a resolution was passed expressing confidence in both candidates, and a v'ery strong committee was formed to work in their interests. Messrs. E. J, Rjghton and Bert Boyle niinounce their candidature for the City Council. Both are widely travelled men of affairs who have a comprehensive platform, which will be declared later. Mr. B. G. 11. Burn, the Mayor of Kaxori, announced at a public meeting held on Thursday evening that lio would again be a candidate for the Mayoralty. The Lower Hutt branch of the Labour I'aitv has selected-the following candidates for the borough council elections.-.— Messrs., W. 11. Bo,yes, G. W. Clout, G. AV.. Mumford, 13. Wilson, and D. lv. Pritchard.
