REMINISCENCES OF OXFORD.
The honorary freedom of the city of Oxford was recently conferred on HearAdmiral Sir Keginald Yorke Tyrwhitl. ' xt'he Mayor (Sir Kobert. Buckell), : in hnndinj; lo him the parchment roll in a caskett of hammered silver emblazoned with the arms of the city and the Tyrwhilt family, said that they welcomed him, an Oxford boy—some of them had known him from youth upwards-who had risen by gallant conduct and great achievements to the rank of rear-ad-' uiiral and to the high command of the Harwich light forces. They had followed his career with intense interest from (lie sinking of the minelayer in the first few davs of the war up to the moment when lie -received the submarines of their beaten enemies. , ■ Sir Reginald Tvnvhitt, who was received with repeated rounds of clicering and the singing of "I''or tie's a Jolly Ciuud Vol low," said lie was a sailor, and, lie was sorry to say, no orator. Jn -accepting the honour of the freedom, he also accepted it in tiri name of the Harwich force. There was not. an officer or man in the Harwich force who would not appreciate, as be did, the honour thoy had bestowed upon him. He was yen prowl to be a native oi Oxlonl, and he was much prouder to J)e a freeman ot llie city. He began his aquatic careerhe would not call it his nautical caieei on the upper river, whore lie rowed his first'race from 'Godstow to Binsey some 38 years ago. He could not tell how many times he was wrecked on the upper river or how many time lie had been iiried outwardly and refreshed inwardly in llie parlour ot "The Trout at tiodsiow. He believed there were some people who lived in that region now who could tell some stories of their early efforts at seamanship. The name of lyrwhilt was not unknown in Oxford, and lie regretted that his father, who had devoted his life to Oxford, had not lived lo see that day.
