Wright were present at the fortnightly meeting of the City Council held on 'Thursday morn ins. Tito Finance and Property Committee reported: "That they have considered the t-uggestidn of the Minister of Public Health that a special clcan-np week should lie held in Wellington, and discussed the question with the City Engineer. The result of snch discussion has been that the City Engineer has been instructed as follow: 'To exercise all possible vigilance in connection with the cleansing of the streets, and authorised to employ additional men or appliances for the purpose of securing the best sanitarv conditions possible, such additional men as ho may consider necessary are to be employed in extending the systemof cleansing the mnin strets of the city C'ii Saturday nights, and in addition to the work carried out in the day time the Citv Engineer is to arrange for the use of the street-sprinkler with disinfectant on the channels of the main streets at night time.'

"That an appeal be made to the public to co-operate in cleaning np backyards and properties of citizens, and also that action be taken against offenders who Ihrow refuse on to the footpaths from shops and dwellings. "That a good supply of disinfectants shall be kept available to the public at the Town Hall at a reasonable price." The report was adopted. TRAMWAYS MATTERS. The following recommendations of the Tramways Committee we're adopted:— (1) That the Hoseneath and Oriental Bay Municipal Electors' Association be informed in accordance with the report of the tramways manager in reply to their letter complaining of overcrowding on the Oriental Bay line during rush hoars. (2) That payment be authorised o? the sum of ,£l2 for a new artificial leg to the boy who some time ago had an arm and leg cut off through a tram accident. (li) That a compassionate allowance of 255. per week now being paid to a tramway employee bo continued until such man is eligible for an old age pension. The man is now sixty-four years of age.

BATHS AND BEACHES. The council decided "That the application of the residents in the vicinity of Bridge Street, lulbirnic South, for tho erection of a bathing-shed 011 the Evans Bay beach east, be not entertained, in view of the small number of persons bathini; in this locality and the facilities already provided for bathers in the middle of tiie beach and at Kilbirnie." "That the proprietors of prominent papers in other parts of tho Empire and America be written to, with a view of obtaining for the library a paper from ("aiiiida (East and West), Cape Colony, .India, and San Francisco, and also that h respect to British trade and other periodicals, action bo deferred until the return to New Zealand of Mr. E. W. DaUon. British Trade Commissioner." "That the renewed application of Mr. James Bonnie for permission to erect a dwelling at tho rear of an existing dwelling at Portland Crescent, bo refused. "That three applications from youths age<l nineteen and twenty years respectively, for the issue of permits to drive taxi-cabs, bo refused." "That an application for consent to a subdivision of property at tho corner of ltosliurgh Street and I'allowfield Avenuo be refused.", "That consent be granted to tho following subdivisions of property, as recommended. and also that the seal of tho corporation be authorised to be affixed torthe survey plans when prepared, viz.: —Webb and Thompson Streets (Tonks Estate). Oriental Parade (Glover), Clyde Quay (Watson),. Sefton Street (Bullock), Sefton Street (Edwards)."

"That consent be granted to the subdivision of laud in Grafton lioad, Eoseneath (Sunderland), and adjacent to Coutts Street (Crawford Estate), subject to tho conditions regarding right-of-way and drainage and details of work, etc., respectively, stipulated by the City Engineer, being complied with, and also that the 6eal of the corporation be authorised to be affixed to tho survey plan when prepared."

"That, as the City Engineer reports that Puru Crescent, Lyall Bay, has been satisfactorily constructed and maintained for the' required period, sucli street be now declared n public street, and also that the deposit of <2100 for maintenance be. now returned to the company." "That the contractois for the erection of the South Wellington fire brigade station be granted six months' ctxension of time within which to complete the work, owincr to labour and supplies being difficult to. secure."

BY-LAWS COMMITTEE. On the recommendation of the By-Laws Committee the following clauses were agreed to:—"That tlic plan of subdivision marked No. !) of the Wellington Gas Company's land, Courtenay Place, Tory, and Wakefield Streets, be not approved." "That notwithstanding the renewed application of the applicai.t, the council adheres to the decision to refuse to consent to the proposed erection of a buildin;; in Oourtenay Place five stories high, with accommodation on the ground floor for shop and store, first floor billiard saloon, and three upper lloors single bedrooms."

The committee reported:—"That they have instructed tile tire brigade and building superintendents to submit a recommendation containing suggested conditions for the control of private motor sheds adjacent to dwellings, with a view of passing a by-law to control such erections." "That they have received a reply from the Minister of Internal Affairs to the representation made to the Minister that legislation be enacted to prohibit the sale of fireworks, except under the same restrictions as the firearms and munitions,( in which he stated that the Department cannot see their way to adopt tlie restrictions recommended, and he also referred the council to city by-law No. 727. which he considers meets the council's desires."
