DWELLINGS FOR SUPER-MEN
\RCIHTECTS CRITICISM OF MODERN TOWN-PLANKING. Mr. Baillie Scott, lecturing on "The Making Habitable of Old Dwellings in Town and Country" at t-lio- Institute of liritish Architects, suggested that in the •pro e ent congested state of yLoildon it would be advisable to turn some .of the lar«er Victorian houses, such ; as those in "Gloucester Road, into llats. Much could bo done to overcome the character of the (structures by various devices, not onlv with internal alterations, but'by the uso* of-amusing decorative schemes and interesting furniture. , • Referring to the modern town-planner, the lecturer said that in true Prussian fashion he loved to hack his way through the little streets, and-make colossal, interminable avenues of immense width, with buildings adapted for the use ot the super-man. A pedestrian' in such o» avenue would find the mcro crossing of a road a gigantic undertaking.- 'As tor me," said Mr. Scott, "I lqok to see towns constructed ou Die scale ot the man o. the usual size, with streets ct the usual width, and it' I want to look at St Pauls I would rather come on it suddenly at a street corner than have Jt at the end of a' great vista. . Vislas arfl well enough, but they should be short ones It is much to be feared , llmt our desire to commemorate our victory over lriKsia will lead us to express those very ciualitifs which wo set ourselves to overcome in her." -
