MANGAHAO SCHEME
STEPS TAKEN WITH. PRELIMINARY WORK. Respecting the Mangahao hydro-electric scheme, the following letter (dated Maicli 31) has been received by the City Council from the Minister of Public Works:— "I am advised by Mr. Parry that you have had several informal conferences with him in respect of tho supply of power from tho proposed Mangahao hydro-electric works, and you ask that your council might receive an assurance i'rom the Government as to when the supply of power will bo available, and also as to the prico at which tho Government will lie prepares to dispose ot such power. In reply, I beg to inform you that I fully recognise the necessity from tho point of view of the Wellington City Council that some definite arrangement should be made with the council regarding these matters, and it is to Hie interest both of the Government and the city that such arrangements should be made at the earliest possible date, and I am prepared to do all in my power -to further completion of such arrangements. I very much regret, however, that it is quite impossible for me at the present time to answer the above questions, seeiii" that nothing definite can be done until Parliament has finally agreed upon the North Island schemes, of which tho Mangahao is part, and: has provided the necessary funds for carrying out the same. As you are aware, in anticipation of tho Mangahao scheme being authorised, steps have already been taken to proceed with preliminary work."
